The American Fisheries Society Pacific Islands student subchapter visited the PIFSC for a lab tour and social with scientists. The students were a combination of undergraduate and graduate students from both University of Hawai‘i Hilo and Mānoa campuses. Most students had never been to a NOAA facility and were very excited to learn about the types of research going on in support of our Pacific Islands regional fisheries. Students got a snapshot of several research projects and divisions across the center including larval fish, connections between reefs and pelagic fisheries, Fishery Independent Surveys, long term monitoring and museum collections, the Coral Reef Monitoring Program, sea turtle ecology and protected species, and fish life history. Additionally, students had an opportunity to network with PIFSC scientists through a employee sponsored lunch social. Ichthyoplankton legend and retired NOAA Bruce Mundy (photo below) participated in the event to pass on some of his knowledge and love of ichthyoplankton to the students. Photo credit: NOAA FISHERIES
